Kakinada, Aug 7th: The Central and State Governments were making efforts to make Indian hand-made textiles withstand the global competition. The skills of artisans were being upgraded for that purpose and welfare schemes introduced for their well-being, said Assistant Director of Handlooms and Textiles, K. Chandra Rao.

Addressing a meeting of artisans on the occasion of World Handloom Day on Friday, Mr. Chandra Rao said handloom industry is the second biggest sector in India after agriculture and it won for the country a place of pride in the comity of nations. Nevertheless, a lot more remained to be done to uplift the conditions of artisans, for which the only solution was to make their products most sought-after ones both within and outside India.

Mr. Chandra Rao further said 65 lakh artisans were in the handloom sector in India and almost half of them were in Andhra Pradesh. East Godavari district has 50 handloom weaver cooperative societies and 18,000 looms functioning in different parts. Funds were sanctioned for weavers in Veeravaram, Hasanbada and Bandarulanka villages under the cluster development scheme. More financial assistance to weavers in the district is on the anvil.
